Alex is also a dedicated eMTB rider, and still dabbles in racing of a sort, doing his best to top the Strava leaderboard on the steepest, gnarliest and twistiest trails the Tweed Valley has to offer – just for fun, of course. He’s one of BikeRadar’s lead testers and knows how to push bikes and products to the limit, searching out the equipment that represents the best value for money. Since working for MBUK, Alex’s focus has moved to bike tech. Alex then moved back to the UK and put his vast knowledge of mountain biking to good use by landing a job working for MBUK magazine as features editor. Hitting those famous tracks day in, day out for eight years, he broke more bikes than he can remember. Alex moved to Morzine in the French Alps at 19 to pursue a career as a bike bum and clocked up an enormous amount of riding. He started racing downhill at the tender age of 11 before going on to compete across Europe. That means we’re delighted to see steep seat-tube angles across the bike’s sizes, long reach figures and a meaty wheelbase.Īdd to the mix a 63.6-degree head tube angle and low bottom bracket and there’s no denying this bike’s got an appetite for gnarly riding.Īlex Evans is BikeRadar’s senior mountain bike technical editor. The new Sentinel’s geometry is truly at the sharp end of modern for a trail bike. It’s got a water bottle mount on the inside of the front triangle and an additional mount on the underside of the top tube, although a standard size and shaped bottle won’t fit on the second set of mounts because it will foul the shock’s piggyback. This means swapping brakes, changing damaged hoses or bleeding them is considerably easier. The new 2020 Sentinel features Transition’s lifetime warranty, although this is only available to the first owner of the bike, 148mm Boost rear axle spacing, a threaded bottom bracket and – in a bold but fantastic move – external rear brake hose routing. This makes it possible for the small-sized bike to come standard with a 150mm dropper, while the medium has a 180mm post and the large, extra-large and extra-extra-large bikes have 210mm posts. To help accommodate long-travel droppers, it’s also increased the seatpost insertion depth.
